Age of Information in Reservation Multi-Access Networks With Stochastic Arrivals: Analysis and Optimization

This paper analyzes and optimizes the average Age of Information (AAoI) Frame Slotted ALOHA with Reservation Data slots (FSA-RD) in a multi-access network, where multiple users transmit their randomly generated status updates to common access point framed manner. Each frame consists one reservation slot several data slots. The is further split into mini-slots. In each slot, that want update will send short packets mini-slots contend for current frame. successful only if packet sent mini-slot. are then allocated those succeed slot. considered FSA-RD scheme, user transmission, termed active user, may need perform attempts before successfully delivering it. As such, number user(s) different frames dependent thus probability making varies from frame, AAoI analysis non-trivial. We manage derive an analytical expression by characterizing evolution as discrete-time Markov chain. consider scheme attempt per update, FSA-RD-One. Thanks independent behaviors FSA-RD-One, we attain closed-form its AAoI, which used find near-optimal probability. Our reveals impact key protocol parameters, such size probability, on AAoI. Simulation results validate our show optimized outperforms slotted ALOHA.
